Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that, the employees were exposed to serious burns on parts of body from the Cutler oven: BAKERY: The Cutler oven, associated parts and exhaust system not only had not been cleaned, maintained and serviced on a regular basis, but also for a long period time, causing residue built-up on the inside walls of the oven. On or about May 30, 2011, the above oven, when the electric power on/off switches were activated, was not working properly and caught on fire, and then an explosion was followed soon after the door of the oven was opened. Two (2) employees sustained very serious burns on the body from the incident. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means to correct the hazard is to: 1. Conduct maintenances and services, including cleanings on a regular basis. 2. Conduct visual inspections before and after each use. 3. Conduct safety inspections and maintenance check-ups on safety control devices. 4. Install high temperature control and limit device. 5. Use appropriate types of heating sources. 6. Establish and train employees in the standard operating procedures. 7. Use other engineering feasibility.
