Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of: a)Final Finish Line (yard area) - Employees working in this area were exposed to the hazard(s) of being struck and/or crushed by moving equipment; operators had not been informed of established safe procedure(s) nor had they been provided related operator training, on or about 8/15/96. Note: Procedures for safely moving trailer halves to the Final Finish Line (Yard Area) were being used, but no such procedure existed for returning temporarily staged trailers to the slab. Some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1. Require equipment operators to physically check that all pathways are cleared prior to allowing equipment to be moved. 2. Require that someone assist equipment operators in verifying that all pathways are cleared prior to allowing equipment to be moved. Or, in the alternative: 29 CFR 1910.178(l): Operator(s) were not trained in the safe operation of powered industrial trucks: a)Final Finish Line (yard area) - Employees working in this area were being exposed to the hazard(s) of being struck and/or crushed by moving equipment and the operators had not been informed of established safe procedure(s) for these moves nor had they been provided related operator training, on or about 08/15/96.
