Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard from falling machinery: a) On 5-28-08, an employee was exposed to crushing injuries while unloading a Genie TZ- 34/20 aerial lift from a flat bed trailer. While the employee was on the trailer to position the aerial lift near the edge of the trailer so it could be taken off with a forklift truck, the aerial lift rolled and fell off the side of the trailer, pinning the employee beneath it. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement to correct this hazard is to follow and implement the Genie Operator's Manual which states to move the machine to different site locations by using a tow vehicle or to use proper lifting techniques to move, load and unload the machine. Only attached rigging to the designated lifting points on the machine. From the four lifting points on chassis, the aerial lift can then be lifted by a crane.
