Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards while climbing a ladder on the back end of a fuel truck: a) On 3-29-05, at 1200 N. 24th Street in Manitowoc, WI, an employee was fatally injured as a result of a fall from a ladder on the back end of a fuel truck. The employee, while carrying a five-gallon container of fuel additive up the ladder, was exposed to a fall hazard of three to ten feet above the ground. Feasible abatement methods would be to follow 1926.1053(b)(21) by maintaining three-point contact while going up or down a ladder and 1926.1053(b)(22) by not carrying an object or load up or down a ladder; raise the container up to the top of the truck with a rope; use a mobile ladder; siphon the liquid from the container with the container on the ground.
