Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employer failed to implement engineering controls necessary to prevent overheating of the solution used to destroy the detonators, thereby exposing employees to explosion hazards: (a)Talon Manufacturing Company, Inc., Plant #7, Lower Alpoca, Demilitarization Procedure for Detonators. The company failed to provide continuous agitation of the solution used to destroy the detonators which would have prevented the solution from overheating. The company also failed to install temperature monitors and temperature controls on the destruction process. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: a.Install agitators on the vessel which contains the solution used to destroy the detonators to prevent localized overheating of the solution. b.Install a continuous temperature monitor with an alarm which indicates that the temperature of the solution is beginning to rise along with a temperature control system that would safely shut down the operation prior to a critical temperature being reached.
