Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed, caught in moving parts, or run over by heavy machinery: a) Farm Power & Equipment Inc. at 37525 Hwy 59 South, Yuma, CO: Employees working with tractors, were exposed to the hazards of being caught by moving parts, caught between, and crushed by the machines. The employer did not ensure that employees were following proper operating safety rules and procedures such as. 1. Always start tractor with range selector and transmission in neutral. 2. Do not leave engine running while tractor or drawn equipment is being adjusted, repaired, or cleaned. 3. Ensure parkbrake is set when tractor is stopped. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Develop a training program for all employees engaged in operation of machinery, such as but not limited to tractors, combines, swathers, etc. This should be followed up by regular retraining and an enforcement/discipline section of the program. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement Certification Letter").tion
