Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of severe burns and lacerations from fire and explosion due to improperly maintained piping containing hydrocarbons under pressure: a) Employees were exposed on a daily basis and on 5/28/86 when outflow piping carrying napatha under pressure at HDS charge heat #1 ruptured resulting in a fire and explosion. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to establish, implement, and enforce an effective program for inspecting and maintaining the required integrity of piping. for further information, refer to ASA/ANSI B31.3.
