Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. Employees emptying refuse bins, using rear-loading compacting equipment, not on a level surface, were exposed to the hazards of being struck or caught between objects and the rear-compacting equipment. Positive means were not used to prevent the vehicle from rolling or sliding backwards when the additional weight of the refuse bins were lifted. Among others, a feasible and useful method to correct this hazard is to provide instruction and training in safe methods of work as specified in Section 6.1 of ANSI Z245.1-1992 - Mobil Refuse Collection and Compaction Equipment, Safety Requirements. NO CERTIFICATION OR DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM.
