Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a). Jacobson Metal Co; waterfront area, south end of scrap yard. An engineering survey performed by a competent person was not conducted to determine the conditions of the crane located on a barge and any possible collapse of the structure prior to permitting employees to dismantle the crane for scrap metal. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to perform an engineering survey prior to the dismantling of any structure where the possibility of collapse might occur. The results of the survey shall be in writing and available prior to dismantling operations to employees.
