Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BLOODBORNE
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were potentially exposed to bloodborne pathogens such as Hepatitis B Virus and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus: (a) On or about 11-16-92 and at times prior thereto, the designated first-aid responder and other employees assisting in the treatment of a blasting accident victim were exposed to the hazard of being infected with the Hepatitis B Virus and/or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus through blood or other body fluids. Feasible and acceptable abatement methods for reducing these hazards, among others, are: (1) Provide Hepatitis B vaccinations, free-of-charge, to designated first-aid responders and other potentially exposed employees. (2) Development a follow-up procedure to be implemented after a potential exposure to the Hepatitis B Virus, Human Immunodeficiency Virus and/or other bloodborne pathogens.
