Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) a suffocation and/or crushing hazard due to employees tunneling in tons of ice that accumulates in the ice house. Employees are exposed from the collapse of ice above them by picking at the top of the tunnel they have dug which results in the ice falling on top of the employee. An employee was buried in the ice on January 6, 1998 and died. "Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to establish and enforce work rules prohibiting tunneling through the ice.
