Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck by exploding tire: (a) On or about October 4, 1995, employees were in process of mounting a Michelin 16.0 inch tire on a 16.5 inch rim. The tire failed and exploded striking the employees and causing serious injuries and death. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard id to implement the tire manufacturers and rubber manufactures association (RMA) safe operating procedures for the servicing tires and provide training to employees in the proper method(s) of changing tires.
