Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to serious fall hazards while operating the Grove SM42RT Scissor Aerial Platform on sloping terrain and the outriggers were not extended while the platform was elevated. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to ensure that the vehicle platform is only elevated when it is parked on level terrain and the outriggers are extended whenever the platform is extended beyond 25 feet in height: (a) Jobsite: Intersection of Routes 18 and 195, New Bedford, MA: Employees were exposed to serious fall hazards in that the Grove SM42RT Scissor Aerial Platform was operated on slopping terrain in excess of the manufacturer's recommended 5 degrees of slope and the outriggers were not extended when the platform was elevated beyond the 25 foot height restriction.
