Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls from an elevation. The scaffold(s) were between 190 to 367 feet above the adjacent ground/water level and the scaffold(s) was/were being raised and lowered by the traction hoisting machines that were being operated without secondary emergency brakes designed to act directly on the suspension cables and are intended to automatically prevent the decent of the hoist and its suspended load under overspeed conditions. a) N.J. side of the Walt Whitman Bridge, nine 2 point suspension scaffolds located between bents numbers 68 and 50 on the West Side of the Jersey Tower and the north side of the bridge roadway. The scaffolds were operated by employees engaged in blasting/painting operations on on the bridge's main suspension cable. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct the hazard is to install Sky Lock Overspeed Brake Safety Devices on each of the eighteen (18) Sky Climber Hoisting Machines being used at the site.
