Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall(s) from an elevation. The hoist on the west side of the scaffold nearest the Philadelphia side of the bridge was supporting a load that exceeded its" rated working load (RWL). a) New Jersey side of the Walt Whitman Bridge, the first of nine two point suspended scaffolds on the West Side of the New Jersey Tower and the North Side of the bridge roadway. The scaffold was occupied by two employees engaged in blasting and painting operations on teh bridge's main support cable. The scaffold was approximately 365' above ground level. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is by lessening the load imposed on the hoist and/or to evenly distribute the load between the two supporting hoists. For assistance refer to: 1) Sky Climber Manual 2) SIA pamphlet.
