Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
The alleged violations below have been grouped because they involve %% similar or related hazards that may increase the potential for injury resulting from an accident. 1a Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls from an elevation where the load imposed on the manila rope being used to suspend the scaffold exceeded the safe working load of the rope. a) N. J. side of the Walt Whitman Bridge, the 1st of nine two point suspended scaffolds on the West side of the Jersey Tower and North side of the bridge roadway. The scaffold was occupied by two employees engaged in blasting/painting operations on the bridge's main suspension cable. The scaffold was approximately 365 feet above the adjacent ground/ water level. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct the hazard is to place the scaffold platform on a safe surface.
