Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) On or about November 18, 1992, and at times prior to that date, employees engaged in operations in and around the Sanding Department were exposed to the hazard of severe burns and other serious injuries caused by a wood dust explosion propagating back through the dust extraction system. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Increase the extraction capacity of the pneumatic dust collection system to conform with the sanding equipment manufacturer's design recommendations. 2. Install explosion venting or explosion suppression devices in the dust collection equipment as specified in NFPA Code 664.
