Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5 (a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to rolling hazards. (a) The project manager and/or bull buck were not surveying the area to be worked for possible hazards and proceeding accord- ing to safe prac-tices before placing crews in the area, they were not conducting on the job evaluation or inspecting the work of the crews to see if their work was being performed safely, they were not conducting or documenting safety meetings, employee orientation training nor were they enforc- ing these policies and procedures in accordance with Alaska State logging standard 07.115 and 07.130. (b) Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this problem would be to ensure that experienced supervisors are conducting such surveys for hazards before releasing crews to the area to be worked, conduct on the job evaluation, inspect their work frequently for unsafe practices, and ensure employees understand the importance of doing the job safely, and that there may be consequences if they commit unsafe acts after being told by the employer to follow safety guidelines.
