Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by components of centrifugal extractors due to a lack of repair and maintenance. a) Sanitary Linen Supply Co. - Neptune, NJ (Washroom) - (3) American Laundry Machinery Co. "No Trux" Centrifugal Extractors were in obvious need of repair and/or maintenance. Inspection and maintenance procedures were not performed. Deficiencies included but are not limited to, missing shock absorbers, disconnected interlocks, broken welds on the extractor rings, missing nameplates for identification, etc. Manufacturer's recommendations were for maintenance to be done at least monthly. Observed on or about 12/13/94. Some feasible and acceptable abatement methods (among others) to correct this hazard include: 1) removing the machinery from service due to a lack of replacement parts. 2) initiating a regular maintenance program according to manufacturer's recommendations.
