Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: HEAT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The hazard of unanticipated contact with heated and/or pressurized acids or gases by employees, subcontractors, or others from outside agencies during an emergency, such as firemen, who may mistakenly actuate valves or disconnect pipes at the wrong time or place, as none of the pipes in the facility were labeled or color coded, on or about 12/12/91. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow directions given in ANSI A 13.1-1981 Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems. (1) Positive identification of the contents of a piping system shall be by lettered legend giving the name of the contents in full or abbreviated form, with additional details such as temperature, pressure, etc. Arrows whall be used to indicate direction of flow. (2) Color may be used to identify the characteristic properties of the contents, but its use shall be in combination with legend.
