Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire in a oxygen-enriched atmosphere. a) On or about 11/18/90, smoking occurred in the Metallurgical Laboratory where pure oxygen was in use. One feasible and acceptable abatement method is to prohibit smoking in area with a potential for oxygen-rich atmospheres in accordance with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet P-14-1983, "Accident Prevention in Oxygen-Rich and Oxygen-Deficient Atmospheres", section 3.3.1, smoking: "Smoking shall be prohibited in all areas where an oxygen-rich atmosphere exists or can occur. The danger of smoking in such areas shall be emphasized to all personnel".
