Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire due to an oxygen-enriched atmosphere. a) On or about 11/18/90. pure oxygen was piped into the Metallurgical Laboratory where a piece of neoprene (rubber) tubing was used in the oxygen piping system between the oxygen drier/regulator and the flexible copper tubing to the spectrometer machine. One feasible and acceptable abatement method is to: Install oxygen service piping in accordance with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G-4.4, "Industrial Practices for Gaseous Oxygen Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems", section 4.12, Flex Connections: flexible connections are commerical units made of stainless steel or a copper base alloy and may be used provided they are cleaned for use in oxygen service.
