Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: erection procedures: (a) On a about 9/4/90 employees erecting a beam between columns C12 and C13 were exposed to the hazards of structural collapse, falling col- umns and beams, and falls from unstable structures in that the employer did not develop and implement erection procedures and sequences to ens- ure stability and support for temporary loading conditions during the erection process. Among other methods feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include but are not limited to: 1). Preliminary evaluation by a qualified person of the bid package, specifications, and drawings for their compatability to design specifications with respect to anticipated erection procedures and or sequences. If discrepancies exist erection procedures shall not continue until corrections or compensating adjustments are made. 2). Prior to erection, procedures, sequence of operation, or any needed compensations shall be reviewed with employees involved in the erection process. 3). During the erection process evaluation of the safety and of the operation with the respect to the support and stability of the struc- ture shall be continous. Any noted, unexpected problems or alterations to the erection procedures must be corrected or adjusted and all parties involved in the process must have a good understanding of any changed procedures.
