Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) On or about June 22, 1993, employees in the process of capping an abandoned oil well at the site 6-3/4 miles northwest of Hoisington, Kansas, were exposed to the hazards of falling objects when a 10-inch mill and wash over pipe slipped out of a chain rigging and fell to the derrick platform. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to: 1) Use a tool appropriate for the task, a pipe handling sub, and; 2) Instruct all employees in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and work practices, and; 3) Instruct all employees in the hazards of working under and/or in close proximity to elevated loads.
