Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck by falling bridge girders which could cause employee(s) to fall and/or jump 30 to 35 feet to the ground below. Methods were not provided to adequately anchor and brace bridge girders as required by ANSI a 10.13-1989, Paragraph 11.3.4. Among other feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to anchor and progressively brace girders to bridge piers during construction as specified in drawings provided to the employer by Homer L. Chastain and Associates, Consulting Engineers.
