Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing and/or falling hazards. a) On or about 9/26/89 employees were exposed to serious physical harm or death when they were allowed to: 1) Work under a suspended load. 2) Work under a suspended load that was beyond the total weight rating capacity of the west electric chain hoist in the ceiling department. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: 1) Ensure that no hoist or combination of hoists be loaded beyond their rated load, except for properly authorized tests. 2) Ensure that the operator not leave the load suspended in the air unattended unless precautions are taken to positively suppor the load.
