Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The hazard of serious burns or other injuries caused by contact with hot metal or exposure to explosions caused by hot metal contacting water; in that, on or about April 4, 1990, employees were exposed to an explosion occurring in arc furnace number 4 when water entered the furnace melting area. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Assure that all manufacturers' recommendations are followed in relation to operation, inspection, repair and/or replacement and, maintenance; 2. Assure training on those procedures is incorporated into the employer's safety and health program for all operators, helpers and maintenance personnel of the electric arc furn- aces; and 3. Assure an engineering study is performed on the electric arc furnaces to ensure compliance of employer manufactured parts with original manufactured specifications.
