Text For Citation: 03 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) The hazards of being crushed or buried by a cave-in while drilling, charging and loading blast holes in the lower area of a twenty-two (22) foot high pile of solidified ammonium sulfate in the main plant, bin #8 on 12/16/86. One feasible and acceptable abatement method among others, to correct this hazard is to use a battering ram type device fifteen (15) feet to twenty (20) feet in length attached to the scoop or bucket of a front- end loader to ram the pile, at different levels and loosen the solidified material while keeping the operator of the front-end loader at safe distance from collapsing materials.
