Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likley to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Expected controls were not exercised over employees who habitually violate unwritten but established work rules in that, safety work rules prohibiting employees from climbing on storage racks throughout the warehouse were not satisfactorily enforced to ensure employees fully and properly utilized material handling equipment such as the Raymond forklift trucks when picking stock orders from these racks and/or when involved in any other duties which would bring employees into the proximity of these racks. An effective method to abate this unsafe practice of physically climbing the racks is to train employees in the proper procedure and vigorously enforce safe work rules, utilizing strict disciplinary action to encourage adherence to safe work rules.
