Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries and death: (a) Grant Steel Corporation; An American 797 crawler lattice boom crane, serial # GS 19048, had it's boom lowered to approximately four feet above ground level and supported by it's cables. No blocking or cribbing was positioned beneath the boom as the lower right hinge pin and the lower left hinge pin were removed thereby causing the boom to collapse. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to use blocking or cribbing on each boom section.
