Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: ELECTRIC
North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to electrical hazards such as: a)Solid Waste Department, Service Garage - the 125-volt electrical receptacles used to energize various tools and equipment were not equipped with Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters (GFCI) to protect the employees. b)Solid Waste Department, Service Garage "Hitching Posts"- the 125-volt electrical receptacles used primarily to power the block heaters on the diesel motors during cold weather were not equipped with Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters (GFCI) to protect the employees. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to install Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters (GFCI) on all 125-volt electrical receptacles in all areas where vehicles are serviced and on all 125-volt electrical receptacles where vehicles are connected by extension cord to power the block heaters on the diesel motors. Reference: National Electric Code 1999, 511-10 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel. All 125-volt single phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in areas where electrical diagnostic equipment, electrical hand tools, or portable lighting equipment are to be used shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.
