Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling conveyor section(s): PLANT: EMPLOYEES DISMANTLING CONVEYOR SECTIONS THAT WERE SUSPENDED FROM THE CEILING, WERE NOT GIVEN ADEQUATE INSTRUCTION AND SUPERVISION TO PERFORM THE TASK SAFELY. THIS CONDITION WAS EXACERBATED BY THE FACT THAT CLEAR LINES OF AUTHORITY WERE NOT DESIGNATED. ONE MEANS OF ABATEMENT WOULD BE TO INSTRUCT EMPLOYEES IN THE PROPER WAY TO DO THEIR WORK SAFELY WHEN THEY ARE ASSIGNED TO JOB TASKS THAT ARE DANGEROUS OR UNUSUAL. CLEAR LINES OF AUTHORITY, IN THE WORK CREW, MUST BE ESTABLISHED PRIOR TO STARTING THE WORK.
