Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employees were exposed to being crushed. Location: 139 Plymouth Street Brooklyn, New York On or about 3/16/13 a) Employees cleaning the hatch of the garbage truck were exposed to being crushed by the operating garbage hatch. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: Develop, implement and enforce an Operating Procedure for all drivers to obey and maintain eye contact at all times with the workers cleaning the garbage hatch. In addition follow ANSI Z245.1 - 2008 Section 6.2.5.2 (page27). On vehicles so equipped, ensuring that all persons are clear of the tailgate before the tailgate is opened or shut and the operator shall warn all persons not to cross under an open tailgate.
