Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to unsafe chain hoists used without the benefit of frequent and regular inspections; including, but not limited to: a)facility, quality control inspection station - locally manufactured wall-mounted jib crane made of 2-inch tube steel and a wooden shim bolted to a steel support beam was not designed to withstand the loads and forces imposed by a 1 Ton HS Type hand-operated chain block hoist. (Ref: American National Standard B30.16-1981, para 16-1.3.2) facility, quality control inspection station - 1 Ton HS Type hand-operated chain block hoist was not afforded the benefit of frequent and periodic inspections to ensure initial and continued serviceability. (Ref: American National Standard B30.16-1981, para 16-2.1.2) facility, quality control inspection station - 1 Ton HS Type hand-operated chain block hoist did not have any records of inspection, operational or load testing. (Ref: American National Standard B30.16-1981, paras 16-2.1.5, 16-2.2.1, and 16- 2.2.2) facility, maintenance shop - supporting structure locally manufactured out of a doubled chain wrapped around a steel roof support beam was not designed to withstand the loads and forces imposed by one-half Ton CM Series 622 hand-operated chain hoist. (Ref: American National Standard B30.16-1981, para 16-1.3.2) facility, maintenance shop - one-half Ton CM Series 622 hand-operated chain hoist was not afforded the benefit of frequent and periodic inspections to ensure initial and continued serviceability. (Ref: American National Standard B30.16-1981, para 16-2.1.2) facility, quality control inspection station - one-half Ton CM Series 622 hand-operated chain hoist did not have any records of inspection, operational or load testing. (Ref: American National Standard B30.16-1981, paras 16-2.1.5, 16-2.2.1, and 16- 2.2.2) Among other methods , one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to have the hoists inspected by a competent inspector, correct any deficiencies, and maintain records.
