Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a tow rope. a) On or about January, 20, 2003, employee(s) were pulling a barge up the stream with a rope. Employee(s) were exposed to a struck-by hazard from the rope due to the lack of a barricade system. One feasible and acceptable abatement is to barricade the area off so employee(s) could not enter into or around the area when barge was being pulled, and ensure the rope towing system and components are designed by a person qualified in designing the towing method.
