Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards associated with a fall from an unstable freight conveyor: (a) Bulova Technology, Inc., PO Box 189, Green Acres Rd., W. Valley Stream, NY, South Side of Building - Employees riding a "Motor Flow" freight conveyor platform which was moving from the second floor to the ground level, were exposed to a fall hazard of approximately 11 feet 6 inches to ground level, without benfit of fall pro- tection; on or about 12/1/90 through 1/3/91. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to establish and enforce adequate safe operating procedures. Procedures such as those stipulated in the manufacturers brochure form #610 and to follow the safety guide lines stipulated in American Standard Safety Code for Conveyors B20.1-1957. Elements essential to an acceptable safe operating procedure include at a minimum: 1. Instruct and train all the employees to recognize and be knowledgeable with regard to the conveyor's safety features; 2. Rigidly enforce the manufacturer's safe work practice rules; in particularly the "No Riding Rule".
