Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to death or severe injuries from a fall hazard: (a) Exide Reading Smelter, Spring Valley Road and Nolan Street, Reading, Pennsylvania, 19605 - An employee determining the extent of damage to an exhaust system fan for the Pallet Shredder was observed to be exposed to an 18 foot fall hazard while standing on the top of the guardrail around the top of the hopper, on or about May 9, 1991. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard include: The use of a safety belt or use of a ladder instead of climbing on the top of the guardrail. In the Alternative 29 CFR 1926.28(a): Appropriate personal protective equipment was not worn by employees in all operations where there was exposure to hazardous conditions: (a) Exide Reading Smelter, Spring Valley Road and Nolan Street, Reading, Pennsylvania, 19605 - An employee determining the extent of damage to an exhaust system fan for the Pallet Shredder was observed to be exposed to an 18 foot fall hazard while standing on the top of the guardrail around the top of the hopper. The employee was not provided with a safety belt and lanyard as fall protection, on or about May 9, 1991.
