Abstract: Employee #1 and a coworker were riding in a company utility vehicle approaching a maintenance shed. As Employee #1 and the coworker approached the maintenance shed, Employee #1 noticed the weed whacker plastic cord placed in the utility vehicle's open glove compartment, dangling from the glove compartment. Employee #1 grabbed the plastic cord, in an attempt to retrieve the cord before falling to the ground. As Employee #1 retrieved the cord, the cord wrapped around his right thumb, and fell underneath the utility vehicle's passenger side rear tire. As the plastic cord wrapped around tire of the utility vehicle, it cut through the top of Employee #1's right thumb, amputating the tip. At a clinic, the staff reattached the tip of the thumb, however, the tip of the thumb was rejected by the body and the clinic removed the reattached thumb tip, and performed a skin graft to fold skin over the amputated portion of Employee #1's right thumb.
