Abstract: At approximately 3:00 p.m. on March 23, 2006, Employee #1, a machine operator, was cutting a 2-ft by 4-ft piece of lumber. He was using a Whirlwind jump saw (Model Number 212R, Serial Number 1600083R) in the northeast end of the yard. The jump saw had an operating pressure 110 psi, an 18 in. diameter saw blade, and was equipped with a foot pedal and a fixed adjustable saw guard. The guard was positioned at 2.19 in. from the cutting table with a 0.75 in. opening between the bottom of guard and the top of work piece. The employee's gloved left hand got stuck between the guard and work piece. The saw blade came up and severed his left thumb. He was transported to Lakewood Regional Medical Center by the paramedics, where he was treated. Employee #1 was hospitalized. The accident was caused, because the guard of jump saw was not adjusted properly to prevent the operator's hand from entering the point of operation.
