Abstract: Employee #1, a carpenter foreman, was cross cutting an approximately 8-ft long wood window header (either a 4-in. by 6-in. or a 4-in. by 8-in. piece of wood) using a portable power driven circular hand saw (Skil-Saw Model Number HD 77M, with a 7.25-in. blade). The saw was equipped with 2 handles arranged so that when utilized, neither hand is exposed to the hazard of the rotating blade. The work piece was not secured or supported to a platform or similar device. Employee #1 held the work piece with his left hand and the saw with his right hand. Due to the size of the blade (the cut depth of the blade at 90-degree angle is 2.375-in.); the initial cut attempt was not sufficient, so Employee #1 turned over the header and started a second attempt to complete the cut. The blade went through the wood and through his left hand. Employee #1 sustained multiple finger amputations. Employee#1 was transported to the hospital where he was hospitalized for three days.
