Abstract: At approximately 3:15 p.m. on December 20, 2005, Employee #1, a carpenter, was holding an 18-in. by 2-in. by 4-in. board with his left hand and was rip cutting it with a Makita hypoid drive circular saw. He was steadying the board by placing its far-end of the board on the ground. The saw jammed, kicked back, struck and amputated his left thumb. Employee #1 was transported to a local medical facility and then flown by helicopter to USC Medical Center in Los Angeles for surgery. The blade guard was operating correctly and not pinned back. Employee #1 was not hospitalized.
