Abstract: At approximately 8:30 a.m. on June 14, 2004, Employee #1, a regular employee of Steven Burt & Associates, Inc., a landscaping contractor located in Bermuda Dunes, CA., was using an Echo model number HC-200 portable gas-powered hedge trimmer to trim a seven-foot tall bougainvillea vine. The hedge trimmer hit a wire keeping the vine straight, and the vine fell forward toward Employee #1. As he held the trimmer in his left hand, he reached out to catch the falling vine with his right hand. His right hand came into contact with the blade of the running trimmer, and the middle finger of his right hand was amputated at the second knuckle. He was treated at Eisenhower Medical Center and was released the same day. He was not hospitalized.
