Abstract: At approximately 3:30 p.m. on September 5, 2001, Employee #1 and a coworker were unloading a truck. Employee #1 was going up the flight of the stairs carrying about three ledgers and as he reached about half way he lost his balance and fell. He dropped the ledger books and sat about 5-ft to 6-ft up on the staircase. The coworker picked up the three ledgers and proceeded towards the stairs and found Employee #1 sitting on the stairs about four stairs up. The coworker asked Employee #1 to get up and he replied "I can't". At this time the coworker reported the incident to the operation manager, who called for assistance. Employee #1 was transported to the Kaiser Permanente hospital and was hospitalized for four days for left tibular and fibular fractures. According to Employee #1 and the coworker there was no tripping hazard, defective carpet or any other condition which could have contributed to the accident.
