Abstract: Employee #1 was tempering optical lenses for eyeglasses. Employee #1 worked alone in a very small optical lab in the back of the retail eyewear store. Employee #1 lowered a tray full of optical lenses into a tempering machine. The machine is filled with solid potassium nitrate crystals. As the machine heats up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, the crystals turn into liquid and coat the lenses. The whole process takes place in a self-contained and fully enclosed machine. The only time the employee might be exposed is when he takes the tray out of the machine. Employee #1 accidentally backed into a counter behind him that jolted his arm causing the potassium nitrate droplets to dislodge from the tray and drop on his thumbs. Employee #1 sustained burns to his right thumb and was treated by a physician and released.
