Abstract: On October 7, 1994, Employee #1 was operating a kister line when he grabbed a box improperly, exposing a fingertip to the steel bar in the conveyor belt's nip point. The flesh on his fingertip and his fingernail were pinched and amputated. An ON-OFF switch for the line was within 5 feet of Employee #1. No other employees were in the area. The belt is fast moving and is equipped with a special gripping surface. Management installed a bridge-type guard over the nip point and substituted a roller for the steel bar that created the nip. Floor, work area lighting, and footwear were not factors in the accident. Heinz, the employer, operates a pet food processing plant including fish processing, canning, and packing operations. Ongoing training programs occur at the company. Employee had 21 years experience with Heinz.
