Abstract: At approximately 7:30 a.m. on December 16, 1996, Employee #1 was using a Delta-Rockwell table saw to rip a 16 in. long by 3 in. wide wooden strip into a 2 in. wide strip. After completing the cut, and while the blade was still running, Employee #1 tried to remove the 1 in. strip by flicking it from the rear side of the blade. The air from the blade pulled both the piece of wood and his left hand toward the blade, ejecting the strip and amputating his index finger. Employee #1, who had 18 years of experience with table saws, said he was familiar with lockout/blockout procedures and that the accident was his own fault. The saw blade was guarded and Employee #1 had used a push stick to guide the piece of wood through the saw. No citation was proposed against the employer, who had a good, ongoing safety program.
