Abstract: At approximately 2:30 p.m. on April 7, 2003, Employee #1 was applying hot asphalt to a church roof in the process of constructing a built-up asphalt roof. Employee #1 was mopping hot asphalt from a wheeled asphalt cart at his left, using a wooden-handled mop, dipping it into the cart and moving it across in front of himself to mop the surface for other workers to lay down a sheet of asphalt-impregnated felt to build up the roof surface. As Employee #1 turned back toward the cart to get more hot asphalt, his left foot slipped on wet asphalt on the roof surface and he lost his balance and started to fall. Employee #1 put out his left hand to stop his fall and his hand went into the cart of hot asphalt, covering his hand and lower arm to just above his watch. Employee #1 sustained first-, second- and third-degree burns to his hand and lower arm. Employee #1 was not wearing gloves at the time of the accident. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
