Abstract: At approximately 10:00 a.m. on February 16, 1995, Employee #1, of Quality Tree Cutting, was using a 066 Stihl saw to top a 24 in. diameter at breast height hemlock tree. He had completely severed the top and was spurred in at the side of the direction of fall when the tree top spun and slid back off the bole. About 4 ft of the large end of the top (13 in. by 36 ft) kicked back and landed on his flip rope, incapacitating him. A cutter heard his cries for help, and using his own climbing rigging effected the rescue. Employee #1 was lowered to the ground with his pass rope and transported to St. Vincent's trauma unit by land ambulance. He sustained a fracture to his right thigh (femur) and undetermined knee injuries.
