Abstract: At about 3:25 p.m. on November 15, 1993, Employee #1 was completing his assigned task of cleaning a mechanical red wine press that was in use. Employee #1 was standing in a 30 in. deep pit using a broom to remove grape skins and seeds from the empty press. When he reached into the drive gear area to clear a clump of debris, his right hand became entangled in the drive gear, amputating his index and middle fingers and crushing the remaining two fingers and thumb. Employee #1 was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where the remaining digits were pinned to repair the various broken finger bones. Employee #1 remained hospitalized for treatment and infection management.
