Abstract: Employees #1 and #2 were pressure testing the drilling fluid pumps of an oil drilling rig to determine if the pumps could hold an operating pressure in excess of 3,000 psi as required by the prospective contractor. When the pumps reached a pressure of between 1,800 and 2,800 psi, a hammer coupler came loose, causing the drilling fluid to strike both employees while they were at the drill operator's station. The fluid's impact knocked the employees forward and down to the floor. Employee #1 sustained trauma to the frontal and posterior sides of his head. The posterior trauma included lacerations. Employee #2 sustained minor head trauma and lacerations mainly on the front part of his head. The concussion and other injuries were caused by either the fluid's direct blow and/or the striking of their heads on the operators' station or the metal flooring. Employee #2 was treated at a local hospital and released. Employee #1 was admitted to a medical center where he remains at the time of this investigation.
